Has character, beautiful location across the street from beach, boat landing/marina, pier and restaurants, and not far from State Street shopping/restaurants. Friendly staff.
A bit worn and frayed, noisy, small room, and facility/services may not warrant room rate, but it is an interesting old place, and it is all about location, location, location.
The bed was old and the bathroom was very small.
beautiful view, excellent location.
only problem room was not ready until 4 pm.
I enjoyed my stay, love that the beach was just across the street. The clerk in the morning, Ronnie, was very friendly. I enjoyed converstation with him.
The room was dark and smelled of smoke, but was reasonably clean
One male receptionist was particularly helpful and competent
Buildings in a bad state. Several doors had been forced open and was still unrepaired jeopardising security as it was quite easy to pry them open again.
There was little to like. Location was the only thing.
First, the room was very small. And, it had two shower/tubs, one a jacuzzi style. It was very noisy. There was a weird mechanical banging sound coming from God knows where. We had to put the floor fan on for white noise to drown out the other noises. There was no mirror in the bathroom. When we asked the desk clerk about it he said that someone broke it but offered no reason for it not being replaced. All in all, a forgettable experience.
Great location by the beach, helpful and friendly staff.
This hotel is pretty tired and in need of some basic maintenance - things like bedside lamps and power points not working. Breakfast was included, but it was pretty basic and there's no breakfast room, so you take it back to your room. Given the price, not great value for money.
Fabulous location - right opposite the beach and just minutes walk to the wharf.
Our room looked absolutely nothing like the pictures online. It seemed as if it had been partly refurbished - electric fireplace, TV and floor tiles were good, as was the little courtyard, but there was no closet (not even a coathanger), no luggage rack, no iron and no clock in the room. We asked for a hairdryer and were given a brand new one. The bed was old and creaked badly. I was so pleased we'd only booked for one night!
The hotel is right on Cabrillo at west beach with a view of Stearns Wharf and harbor. Armando at the front desk was very cool and nice and helpful. Ala Mar is close to State Street restaurants and shopping. It has an old California beach hotel charm that's cool.
This is California beach funky. The least expensive beach front hotel in SB I think. Phone didn't work. The place old funky and outdated. The closet was large but only had five hangers that worked. It's sort of a bohemian retreat, can hear everything in surrounding rooms. Breakfast is catering truck plastic wrapped pastries, a waffle maker, coffee, oj. I will pay a little bit more and try one of the surrounding properties next time.
Ala Mar has a perfect location for visiting Santa,Barbara,is low key and old fashioned. The room was clean, albeit a bit shabby, but comfortable and clean.
Well localized but....be aware of the negative aspects (below)..
The building is old ,looks almost like if it was abandoned by the owners. After following excelent suggestions of "Booked.net" in Carmel and San Francisco this one is much bellow the standards in all aspects-except for its convenient location.
If you're looking for a clean room, I strongly suggest to skip for this offer and you will find much better condition with same money. The room was so dirty, such as bed sheet and bathroom was horrible, too dark...I don't want to come back Never Again in this Trash Motel!!!
the hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. very close to wharf and shopping all walking distance. very clean hotel.
comfortable bed, location, staff
poor breakfast selection, inedible food , front door not a tight fit, noisy neighbors, no shelves or hangers for clothes, shower door did not close properly
